Your roof is one of the most important lines of defense when it comes to protecting your home. It protects your family and all of your precious belongings from the weather elements. There are a few components to an effective roofing system: proper design, quality materials and quality application all play a large role in the effectiveness and life span of a roof. Missing or torn underlayment, poor quality shingles, poor installation and poor ventilation can all cause serious issues.
Shingles are not 100% waterproof on their own. The roofing underlayment (commonly referred to as “peel and stick” and “secondary water barrier”) is just as important as the shingles to protect against water intrusion. Shingles are designed to shed the water off of the roof in conjunction with gravity. Underlayment however, actually protects the plywood decking from moisture, preventing mold and wood rot. Water and humidity are a huge factor in our state, so we feel it is important to use only the highest quality underlayment available. Mike Willis feels that a self-adhered underlayment is the absolute best option when it comes to covering the wooden roof deck. Other contractors often opt for the cheaper alternative, a felt underlayment. A felt underlayment is perfectly legal per our stringent building codes; however, it is much thinner and tears very easily.
There are three different types of shingles installed on every shingle roof. First, you have your starters; starters are pre-cut and installed on the eaves and rake edge of the roof. They are installed below the first course of field shingles. Starters provide added protection by securing the first row of field shingles at all of the roof’s edges. Next, you have your field shingle; this is probably what you think of when you picture a shingle roof. The vast majority of shingles installed today are “dimensional shingles” (pictured above). They are a very affordable and effective option when selecting a roofing material. Lastly, you have your hip and ridge shingle, think of this as a “seal” that protects from water intrusion at the ridge of the roof. The ridge of the roof is the peak of the roof extending the roofline. It is common to have several different ridges on the roof depending on the roof’s architecture.
